Itinerary description

Stand Up Paddle route Mallorca from Portitxol to Iglesias Ntra. Sra. del Remedio

Details on the church:
In the mid-19th century, Es Molinar was made up of a row of summer houses and fishermen's houses that stretched along the seashore, next to the hostels built along the road leading to Palma. The inhabitants of these houses, in order to facilitate the fulfilment of their religious duties, requested the construction of a temple in these places. This idea gradually took shape and, after expressing these wishes to the competent authorities, it was soon possible to bring it to fruition.

A Board of Works was appointed. The Captain of the Port of Palma gave the necessary land for the construction of the church on the land of the orchard known as "Ses Figueres Baixes", with a plot of land measuring 850 square metres. On 26th August 1850, the Construction Board held a session and agreed to address a petition to the Bishop requesting the necessary permission to build an oratory, which it was agreed to dedicate to the Assumption of Our Lady. The then Bishop of Mallorca, Rafael Manso, granted the requested permission and the construction work began with great enthusiasm.

The Board of Works began to work tirelessly collecting alms and both the holidaymakers and those who had always lived in the Barriada, gave generously. Progressively the walls of the new church were raised and in less than five years the work was about to be inaugurated. The church is 18 metres long by 8 metres wide and 8 metres high. Inside, a small choir was built above the entrance door.

DEDICATION

During these years of construction, the idea of dedicating the small church to the worship of Our Lady of Remedy, a devotion that had been introduced in Palma by the Religious Trinitarians who had their convent in the current residence of the Fathers of San Felipe, began to take shape. In 1835 those Religious had been forced to abandon the convent and it is assumed that one of those exclaustrated Fathers was the one who had the initiative to dedicate the small church of El Molinar to Our Lady of Remedy, patron saint of the Trinitarian Order.

At the end of June 1855, the little church was about to be blessed and inaugurated. At that time, the members of the Board of Works: Damiàn Campins, José Bestard, Francisco Ferragut, Bartolomé Lladó and others addressed a petition to the then Bishop of Mallorca, His Grace Miguel Salva, requesting the necessary permission for the blessing of the new church, an image of the new patron saint, Our Lady of Remedy, and the necessary ornaments for worship. On the 8th of July of the same year 1855, the blessing took place with all solemnity.

NEW TEMPLE

As the years went by, the small oratory on the seashore, built when El Molinar was hardly more than a small summer colony, could not cover the spiritual needs of the faithful and, especially in summer, there were more people who had to hear mass from outside the church than those who could be inside. The first stone was solemnly laid by the Bishop Dr. D. Rigoberto Domenech on the 29th of June 1924 and on the 15th of July 1928 the new parish church was blessed and inaugurated officially.
