Itinerary description
You can access the Douro river using the small dock platform right next to Bar do Rio (or alternatively the small beach to the aforementioned bar). Whatever you do don't use the ramp, it accumulates a lot of slime and gets very slippery!!
You navigate to your right (around 500m) and you can see Ilha do Amores (loosely translated as Lovers Island) and right in front of it the entrance to Paiva river.
Once in Paiva you can paddle upstream for around 2,5 to 3 Km without any problems. At this point you'll start encountering stronger currents and rocks that make it unsafe - time to turn around :-)
It's a short ride but amazing.. the scenery is beautiful and you'll hear and see (very) small waterfalls throughout the course, wild ducks and even some smaller turtles if you're lucky :-) Enjoy! I loved it ...

HI Nuno do you need any official authorization to navegate in Portugal rivers or lakes?
thanks
Hi Sam,
for activities like SUP I don't think you do, at least I've been doing it without any issue. If you're planning to use a boat or any other motor powered vehicle I don't really know and therefore, I would advise you to contact the Portuguese Maritime Authorities.
Enjoy!
All the best!
Nuno
Thanks Nuno!! I´m thinking to make SUP in Portugal , but I didn´t find any infromation about authorization, like here in Spain that you need an authorization to make SUP in rivers and lakes.
Thank you very much!!!!
no auto needed, for boats without power no autos needed exception is for fishing, in that case you need to record the boat and get proper license
