Itinerary description
Lava Butte is a beautiful but challenging road even without evidence of recent flash floods. This road should only be tried with a high clearance 4x4 or a trail motorcycle. After flash flooding, the trail is only accessible by motorcycle or extreme 4x4s.
Take a few moments to explore the areas in the vicinity of the trail. In the first three miles, there is scenery that appears to be a mini-Grand Canyon.
The areas around Lava Butte are steep, rough and unforgiving and should only be attempted by careful and responsible riders.

Definitely the most difficult of the three main trails in the area but luckily the BLM or the power company has repaired the road (for now). There are a few sections that are steep, have some loose rocks or off-camber turns near the power line towers but the scenery is amazing.
I’m down for a ride today
