Itinerary description
A 43km marathon, 3.200m vertical elevation.
Unfortunately i changed battery and the app stoped recording properly...
The last part which is missing is from inside the agia eirini gorge to agia eirini village.
I started from agia eirini and i followed a clear path with no signs that ends to the asphalt road that goes to omalos plateau.
After 100-200m i turn right to the road that goes to gre leska.
There is a yellow sign for the path that goes to koustogerako next to the road. At this point i have left water and supplies. I didnt follow the path but i moved east to reach psilafi summit the highest summit of selino region. (Aprox 2.30h)
There is a beautiful scenary where you can see the north and south coast and the cillages of selino region.. From psilafi you can see paleochora and omalos plateau plus the main lefka ori mountain region.
From psilafi o moved east to reach the next summit strifomadi. From there you can take a close look to gingilos and tripiti gorge. There is no path..
From the south face strifomadi there is an old path but i descented the north face of it. It is a summitline that ends on gingilos path. Its is a difficult descent.
From gingilos path (check waypoints) after a few meters there is linoseli water source where i refill my flasks with fresh and cold water. (2l)
You can always find water there..
After the water source i ascented to gingilos col and gingilos summit. (From omalos to gingilos there are signs) after gingilos first summit i descented to gingilos volakias col (no path) and ascented volakias. There is a path with no signs. At volakias mountain region you can see a different and vary soacial type of rock. Its like you are at a natural history museum!
Lefka ori are devided in 3 fegions. The western which is the part west of samaria and volakias is the highest summit. Central lefka ori. There are located yhe highet summit and yhe alpine dessert and th eastern part of horaftres (max 1500m) where it is east of askyfou plateau.
Furthermore from volakias the view of samaria gorge is breathtaking!
From volakias i turn back to the col from the same route and then i desnented to gingilos col. No path i try a randomly to rach the col. Everytime i do this part i try from another point. The track i did is not the best route to reach gingilos col. It is one of the worst! So dont follow my track at this point!! I suggest to go back to gingilos summit and follow the path.
From gingilos col i followed an old and partly exposed path that traverse the south face of strifomadi.
I love this part of lefka ori BUT as i wrote the path is not clear and it has exposed parts! Be careful!!
The difficult part is until tou reach koriaris summit. From there it is easy to follow the path to ahlada sheperd house. I should mention that there is a water source afyer koriaris (check waypoints) but it is not sure if there is any flow during summer. It depends on the previous winter. This year it had very slow flow and i didnt take water. I never count on that water source but if there is flow it is an extra for me! Btw i took water from 2 points were the snow was melting.
The path from the south coast of strifomadi to alhada and koustogerako has yellow and whiye signs. One highlight is just bwfore ahlada where you can see next to your foot the gorge and the cliffs.
From ahlada 1600m aprox. I descented to the path that connects omalos tokoustogerako. At this point (check waypoints) i turn left and after a few km the path ends to agia ekaterini chapel. Feom there i followed the dirt road with some shorcuts that goes to koustogerako village.
At koustogerako therw is water source (check waypoints) where i refill for last time water. There is also a cafe (i am not sure if it is open all year long).
After koustigerako just before the main square i turn right as you can see on the map to another dirt road which ends at the entrance of agia eirini gorge.
At this point during the summer there is a cantine if you need to eat or drink something but first be sure that it will be open!
Inside the gorge there is no water (maps shows sources but they are wrong!!)
and it takes about 1.30h to agia eirini village.
