Itinerary description
Done in 6h 5 min running time, moving pace of 7.8km/h.
Very easy (regular yellow markings) and mostly soft terrain, even on a wet day. There is a small bit of asphalt going up the Rigipass (as the pass uses a narrow road) and then from Amden down (the bit from Amden to Ziegelbrücke is probably worth avoiding).
The route was conceived to investigate area and to have a late-early in the season uncomplicated run. For July, August, September runs, the Alpstein area will have more exciting and challenging paths.
Good wiews to Alspstein, Säntis, Bodensee, Appenzell,
You have public transport in Kronberg (cable car) and bus in Schwägalp, Stein SG, and Amden. It is easy to cut the route short.
Even on a cloudy wet November day the views are quite nice both ways.
The route starts following up some skiing pistes in Appenzell and then Follows the ridge to Kronberg and then down to Schwägalp. From there it follows Route 3 all the way up to the Rigipass, down to Stein SG and up to Vorder Hohi pass. From there the weather got very foggy and went down to Amden.
It is probably worthwhile to stop in Amden. The run to Ziegelbrücke was a bit unnecessary but we were so cold with wet rain that preferred to avoid having to wait for a bus .

As an aside, the ridge route is marked for snow shoes. It must be quite an impressive snowshoe walk from Kronberg down to Appenzell.
