Itinerary description

Route was done in 5h45minutes of moving time, fairly relaxed pace.

The precise length and elevation for the route (courtesy of Schweizmobil) is 42.92km and 2682 metres of ascent and 2485 metres of descent.

If the day is clear it is a good route to enjoy views.

In terms of trail the first leg from Meiringen to Grindelwald via Grosse Scheidegg it is nicer in that the path varies a bit and it is narrow most of the time.

The trail from Grindelwald to Lauterbrunnen via Kleine Scheidegg and Wengen is a wider double track trail which any car could drive on (no cars drive it but just to get the sense). The first few kilometres up from Grindelwald are asphalted.

To note we were intending to follow Via Alpina Route 1 but we made a small mistake right in Grosse Scheidegg and took the rather fun narrow path via Stepfihubel-Schmale Ritt. THERE ARE ABOUT 100-150 METRES OF FAIRLY EXPOSED PATH. Yes it is secured with ropes but you will walk a section with a very narrow single trail with a small abyss on each side.

Try to stick to Route 1 and ignore our track from Grosse Scheidegg down to about 1440 metres of altitude. . The best way to know you are in Route 1 is that the path crosses the road. To avoid making our mistake drop down into first curve of the road you see from Grosse Scheidegg (where the small huts are) and keep doing down,.. check Schweizmobil if you have the app.

The route has public transport nearby (Postbus and Cogwheel train) so you can do shorter versions of it.
