Itinerary description
This is really neither a trail nor a road run. I have classified as trail because it´s got light hills and its kind of a mix of hard pressed gravel trail and asphalt with probably less than 5% of soft trails. This is neither a mountain trail nor a fast asphalt to try to train speed.
It´s an entertaining route with some nice views over Zürichsee and agricultural areas near Zürich (even some vineyards). The last 8 km into Zürich are just road run.
There are a couple of nice "tobels", (i.e. small narrow canyons through which a stream flows down).. one around Küssnacht ZH, and the other around Dorfbach.. They are reasonably pretty and in forested areas.. (in the Küssnachtertobel, I have a 1 kilometre error as I went off course).
I recommend following the signs for Route 84. It is reasonably well signposted but if you are running you will need to stop a few times and check.
The beggining to Rapperswil is completely flat and with neat wooden bridge that separates from the train lines.
No sticks or trail shoes are needed for this route. The route can always be made shorter by running down to one of the many train stations that are along the lake connecting with Zürich.
Done in 4hrs 26 min net time (with rain showers) .. gross time with stops-photos-orientation a further 20 min
