Itinerary description
Trail running with group of Fanis Arkoumanis (one of the top trail runners in Greece) to the peak of Prasoudi (1750m). I knew I wanted to come back this place after last week letting go the peak climb, but I did hope to do it so soon :-D
0,0k at 650m - Pournarokastro/Start. We set off from Pournarokastro with the longer climb by the dirt roads (exactly my descent from last week's run). The grade is moderate (700m in 10k = ~7%) and allows to maintain running cadence for all the distance - great effort and good workout. I managed to keep up with top runners of the group at about 7:00/km pace. Last few houndred meters were really demanding for me.
10,0k at 1385m - Off the road. Exactly at 10th km at one of the bends of the road, there is a small spring (water all year round) going right up and we followed it until small path starting to the left. Quick stop to drink some water and we continued with the path. This is the most difficult climb with great grade (~35%), climbing 400m of altitude in less than 1.3k of distance! Power hiking all the way (even without power at the end :-P) to the peak.
11,4k at 1750m - Prasoudi peak. One of the smaller peaks of Panachaiko range but the one offering the best panoramic views to the city and gulf (see photos). From here fairly flat section continues SE to Prasinovrysi.
12,4k at 1740m - Prasinovrysi (the green spring). The place is called "green spring" and it's a plateau, just below the highest peak with another refuge. Really cold and great water from the spring! Quick stop and comeback to Prasoudi and steep downhill to first refuge (one I did stop last week).
15,0k at 1375m - Spring at Refuge. Another spring, another stop. This time a bit longer to gather the whole group again (we splitted quite a bit, according to everyone's strenghts). The final descent done from refuge with marked hiking path (my ascent from last week). Pretty fast but without breaking our necks.
18,4k at 800m - Dirt road. End of hiking path, and rest of descent with fast run following dirt road.
20,5k at 650m - Pournarokastro/Finish.
I give it difficult for overall distance, elevation gain and my effort as well. I was trying to keep up with top runners of the group all the way and it really costed me big time! I was very happy to have company and finally run to the peak :-D
