Itinerary description
This is a loop trail that I started near the Kings shops at Waikoloa. It goes from 'Anaeho'omalu Bay (A Bay) along shore line trails, Resort beaches, and along golf courses (this is all public access). This includes going through the Hilton Waikoloa, then on to the Ala Kahakai Trail. Trail continues through Mauna Lani Point, Makaiwa Bay, Mauna Lani beach and Hotel, and then Paula Bay with the Fairmont Orchid Hotel. I then went a little further along the shore trail to the road access for the beach and Puako/Malama Petroglyphs.
I now left the beach trail and ran along the road to the public parking and trail access off of Pauoa rd. (there was a short detour, as I turned on a road that was blocked with a gate). I then passed by "The Shops at Mauna Lani" just before reaching the public parking.
Once at the Paula rd public parking lot continue on the paved trail, until you come to where the Kings trail joins. Then take the Kings trail back to the start in Waikoloa.
A couple of things to consider:
Much of the shoreline trail, and all of the Kings trail is rough lava rock. Footing can be challanging, particularly if you are running.
It is best to do this in the morning before it gets too hot. Pack enough water (at least a couple water bottles)...you could also purchase something to drink at the resorts beach concessions, or The Shops Mauna Lani as you go by them. The Kings trail section is the hottest section, because you are just traveling through lava.
There are the Puako/Malama Petroglyphs trail head near where I left the shore trail for the road section. They are an interesting side adventure.
Also there are Petroglyphs along the Kings trail (between the two Waikoloa beach drive crossings) in Waikoloa.
