Itinerary description
Toyohashi is one of the few cities in Japan where tram lines still remain. This tram line is often used to get to Toyohashi Park where Yoshida Castle Ruins and Museum are located. One end of this tram line is Undokoen-mae Station the tram station for Iwata Undo Park. Iwata Undo Park is an athletic park but for Toyohashi residents it is a place to enjoy cherry blossoms during April and autumn leaves during November to December.
From Ekimae to Undokoen-mae it takes about 22 minutes.
Waypoints
Toyohashi Station
To take a tram train first get out from the East Exit of Toyohashi Station.
East Exit and Passage to tram line start
East Exit of Toyohashi Station is the busiest area of the city and you may have some interesting things to take photos. Many Toyohashi tourists find the store with space shuttle on top amusing. It is a pachinko parlor called "USA". Tram line called Shinai-sen starts from the East Exit area. It is easy to find. Just follow the direction as shown in uploaded photos here.
Tram Start
The tram charges flat fare of 150 yen for adults and 80 yen for children (6-12). There are two separate destinations for this tram: one for Akaiwa-guchi and the other for Undokoen-mae. This time I chose the tram bound for Undokoen-mae.
Undokoen-mae Station
Undokoen-mae Station is the closest tram station to Iwata Undo (Athletic) park with walking/jogging courses and the pond noted for cherry blossoms and autumn leaves views.
Toyohashi Municipal Stadium
This is the baseball stadium used for regional championship games. Occasionally professional baseball games are held here. When I went there an elimination game for junior high school championship game was going on.
Suijinike Pond
This is the pond which is often used to represent this park. The pond used to be twice as large and half of which was gone and now a baseball stadium. It also used to be the reservoir pond. Suijin means water god. As the name shows this pond has divine and serene atmosphere right in the suburban Toyohashi area. (Toyohashi no Shiseki-to Bunkazai, 3rd edition 1997)
