Itinerary description
El Cid North Face via Ferrata
Different and interesting Ferrata with lots of climbing on rock without rungs, chains up slabs, scrambling sections, high paths and rungs in steep places or where required to assist climbing. The more testing climbing section can be bypassed with an escape route about two thirds of the way up.
Whilst all the gear, cables etc are in good condition, some of the paths and steps are badly eroded especially at the start but also high up making off cable sections less safe. Also some sections are now very polished and the occasional additional chain (instead of baggy cable) or staple would be useful. This Ferrata is very well used, there were lots coming down carrying helmets and gear who had completed it so it’s a shame that there has been no maintenance carried out.
The route emerges on the very summit and there is a good zig zag footpath to walk off back to the parking place.
Access is from A31 junction 205 from Alicante, as soon as you leave the A31 take the sharp left turn before the motorway bridge (do not go under the bridge) then the second right (has a footpath sign for El Cid 5.5km). Follow this for approx 2km to a parking area. Take the wide forest road leaving the parking area (not the signed footpath - this is the return route) and after about 1.5 miles of uphill trudge the start of the Ferrata is marked by two cairns on the right.
