Itinerary description

🇪🇸 Español: Este recorrido es una combinación de dos vías ferratas, situadas una enfrente de la otra: La Mina (K3+) y La Muela (K3), en Villahermosa del Río. Existe la posibilidad de hacer las dos, o sólo una. Nosotros aparcamos donde hay un pequeño descampado y un panel informativo. Hay espacio para unos 4 coches y está muy cerca de ambas rutas. Desde este aparcamiento se puede ir andando hasta el pueblo de Villahermosa del Río si se quiere. De hecho, también puedes aparcar en el pueblo, si prefieres caminar un poco antes de empezar la subida.

Para aprovechar al máximo el día y el buen tiempo que teníamos, hicimos las dos vías ferratas empezando por La Mina que es la más larga de las dos, es más nueva y tiene más "juguetes", y luego seguimos por La Muela que es la más antigua de las dos. Vamos a hacer un pequeño desglose de estas dos rutas:

Vía Ferrata La Mina

La vía ferrata La Mina es una pasada y perfecta para los amantes de este deporte. Sin embargo, quizá no la recomendaríamos para niños o principiantes. He aquí algunos puntos interesantes de la ruta:

La aproximación – El inicio de la vía ferrata se encuentra al final de un pequeño sendero forestal y nos llevará unos 10 minutos.
La cueva – El camino nos lleva a una pequeña abertura de una cueva por la que tendremos que arrastrarnos para atravesar el túnel. Es aconsejable llevar casco y utilizar una linterna frontal si se dispone de ella. Al final del túnel hay una gran abertura en la cueva desde donde tendrás unas vistas impresionantes del paisaje circundante y comienza el primer tramo de la vía ferrata saliendo por la izquierda.
La escalera – Este famoso tramo fue en realidad bastante fácil de sortear. El reto puede que sea más psicológico que físico para la mayoría.
El péndulo – Un paso horizontal por el que nos balanceamos con la ayuda de una cadena. Es bastante divertido.

Al final de este tramo de la vía ferrata, si queremos continuar hasta el puente tibetano y el rápel, caminamos unos 5 minutos siguiendo un sendero a la izquierda. Si no, se puede volver a los coches tomando el mismo camino pero hacia la derecha.

Puente tibetano – Largo y no demasiado tenso. ¡Es una auténtica pasada hacerlo! Si no quieres hacer el puente, puedes evitarlo y seguir recto hasta el rapel.

Una vez pasado el puente tibetano, nos dirigimos hacia la estación de rapel al final de esta ruta.

El Salto del Buitre – El rapel tiene una longitud de 60m y se puede fraccionar. La segunda reunión de anclaje está a 33m.

Si no quieres descender en rapel puedes abandonar volviendo por el camino hacia la derecha que te llevará de vuelta al coche.

Vía Ferrata La Muela

La vía ferrata de La Muela nos pareció un poco más dura físicamente porque había unos pequeños salientes y empezábamos a estar un poco cansados por la vía ferrata anterior. En nuestra opinión, no es tan divertida como la VF de La Mina, pero no por ello deja de ser genial. He aquí lo más destacado de esta ruta:

La aproximación – Desde el coche, se tarda unos 5 minutos a pie.
El inicio – En el camino encontraremos un corto tramo equipado con cable que debemos seguir hasta llegar al primer tramo vertical de la vía ferrata.
El recorrido – Este recorrido consiste en una serie de subidas verticales seguidas de travesías laterales, algunas de las cuales están equipadas con pasamanos de cadena.
Los desafíos – Hay algunas secciones ligeramente salientes a lo largo del camino que añaden un desafío interesante.
Rapel opcional – Al final de esta vía ferrata, hay una reunión de aseguramiento/anclaje. Se puede descender en rápel de la misma manera que subimos. Hay anclajes y anillas de rapel por todo el recorrido, sólo hay que seguir la ruta de vuelta.

Una vez arriba, hay que atravesar el pueblo y regresar siguiendo la calle de vuelta u opcionalmente a través de una cueva/barranco. Nosotros pasamos por el barranco. Supuestamente, allí hay un sendero que lleva al borde de un acantilado con estaciones de anclaje para rapelar unos 30 metros. Buscamos un rato pero no fuimos capaces de encontrarlo así que volvimos al coche ya que se nos hacía tarde. Si sigues este recorrido y encuentras el camino para acceder a esta última estación de anclaje, por favor ponlo en los comentarios 🙏🏼 para que con suerte podamos terminar la ruta allí la próxima vez.

🇺🇸 English: This track is a combination of two via ferratas, both across from each other: La Mina (K3+) and La Muela (K3), in Villahermosa del Río. There is the possibility of doing both, or just one. We parked where there is a small clearing and an info panel. There is room for about 4 cars and it is very close to both routes. From this parking area, you can easily walk to the town of Villahermosa del Río if you want to. In fact, you can park in the town too, if you prefer to walk a bit before starting the climb.

To make the most of the day and the great weather we had, we did both via ferratas by starting with La Mina which is the longer of the two, is newer and has more "toys", and then moved on to La Muela which is the older of the two. Let's do a breakdown of these two routes:

Via Ferrata La Mina

Via ferrata La Mina is really cool and perfect for lovers of this sport. However, we probably wouldn't recommend this for kids or first-timers. Here are some highlights of the route:

The approach – The start of the via ferrata is at the end of a small forest path and it takes about 10 minutes.
The cave – The path eventually leads us to a small cave opening where you'll have to crawl to get through the tunnel. It is advisable to wear a helmet and use a headlamp if you have one. At the end of the tunnel there is a large cave opening where you'll have impressive views of the surrounding landscape and the first section of the via ferrata begins by exiting to the left.
The staircase – This famous stretch was actually quite easy to get through. The challenge may be more psychological than physical for most.
The pendulum – A horizontal step that we swing across with the aid of a chain. It's quite fun.

At the end of this section of the via ferrata, if we want to continue on to the Tibetan bridge and the rappel, we walk for about 5 minutes following a path on the left. If not, you can return to the cars by taking the same path but to the right.

Tibetan bridge – Long and not too tense. It's a real blast to do! If you don't want to do the bridge, you can avoid it and go straight on to the rappel.

Once past the Tibetan bridge, we head towards the rappel station at the end of this route.

El Salto del Buitre– The rappel is 60m long and can be split up. The second anchor station is 33m down.

If you don't want to rappel down you can exit by getting back on the path towards the right which will take you back to the car.

Via Ferrata La Muela

Via ferrata of La Muela seemed a little tougher to us physically because there were a few slight overhangs and we were starting to get a bit tired from the previous via ferrata. It's not as fun as VF La Mina in our opinion, but very cool nonetheless. Here are the highlights of this route:

The approach – from the car, it takes about 5 minutes on foot.
The start – On the trail we'll find a short cable-equipped section that we should follow until we reach the first vertical section of the via ferrata.
The route – This route consists of a series of vertical climbs followed by lateral traverses, some of which are equipped with chain handrails.
The challenges – There are a few slight overhanging sections along the way that add an interesting challenge.
Optional rappel – At the end of this via ferrata, there is a belay/anchor station. You can rappel down the same way we went up. There are rappel anchors and rings all over the route, just follow the route back.

Once at the top, we have to go through the town and return by following the street back or optionally through a cave/ravine. We walked through the ravine. Supposedly, there is a path there that leads to a cliff edge with anchor stations to rappel about 30 meters. We searched for a while but weren't able to find it so we just went back to the car since it was getting late. If you follow this track and find the path to access this last anchor station, please put it in the comments 🙏🏼 so that hopefully we can finish the route there next time.

🇺🇸 Once we are past the tunnel (keep in mind that the cave is quite narrow and we must crawl for a bit), we reach the end of the cave, and the beginning of the via ferrata.

Escalera | Ladder

🇪🇸 Tras pasar el primer tramo, llegamos a la escalera. No es nada difícil, al contrario, es muy entretenido hacerlo y es algo que la diferencia de otras vías ferratas.

🇺🇸 After passing the first section, we reach the stairs. It is not difficult at all, on the contrary, it is quite fun and it is something that sets it apart from other via ferratas.

🇪🇸 Llegamos al final de la vía ferrata. A partir de aquí tenemos dos opciones:

Seguir la senda por la derecha, para acabar la ruta y volver al coche.
Seguir la senda por la izquierda, que nos llevará al puente tibetano y el rappel.

🇺🇸 We have now reached the end of the via ferrata. From here we have two options:

Follow the path to the right, to finish the route and return to the car.
Follow the path to the left, which will take us to the Tibetan bridge and the 60m rappel.

🇪🇸 Tras pasar el puente, subimos una peldaños y seguimos la senda.

🇺🇸 After passing the bridge, we go up a few steps and follow the path.

Reunión rápel | Rappel anchors

🇪🇸 Llegamos al inicio del rappel. Es un rappel de unos 60m, que se puede fraccionar. Hay unos cables de vida instalados para bajar a la reunión que consiste de dos parabolts con anillas y una chapa.

El primer tramo tiene unas tablas de madera instaladas para evitar rozamientos en las cuerdas y debajo de eso unos 20m de rappel volado.

745m – 712m de inicio del rapel a fraccionamiento (33m)
712m – 689m de fraccionamiento al suelo (23m)

🇺🇸 We arrive at the beginning of the rappel. It is a 60m rappel, which can be split. There are some safety cables installed to get down to the anchors. The anchors consist of two parabolts with rappel rings and an extra anchor plate.

The first section has some wooden boards placed to avoid rubbing on the ropes and about 20m of free rappel.

745m – 712m from the start of the rappel to the next anchor station (33m)
712m – 689m from the anchor station to the ground (23m)

🇪🇸 A unos 33m abajo se encuentra el punto de fraccionamiento que igual a la primera reunión, consiste de dos parabolts con anillas y una chapa. Tened en cuenta que aquí no hay repisa amplia y cuenta con un espacio bastante limitado (2-3 personas como mucho).

712m – 689m de fraccionamiento al suelo (23m)

🇺🇸 About 33m down is the next anchor point that also consists of two bolts with rings and a plate. Keep in mind that there is no shelf to stand on here and there is quite limited space (2-3 people maximum).

🇪🇸 De aquí seguimos la senda hacia la izquierda para volver a la carretera/coche.

🇺🇸 From here we follow the path to the left to return to the road/car.

Puente | Bridge

🇪🇸 Llegamos al puente. Hay dos opciones:

Volver al coche que se encuentra a la izquierda.
Realizar la vía ferrata de La Muela.

Return to the car by continuing on the left.
Do the via ferrata La Muela by continuing on the right.

Tramo equipado | Equipped section – VF La Muela

🇪🇸 Llegamos al primer tramo, que es un tramo equipado horizontal, y nos lleva hasta el inicio de la vía ferrata.

🇺🇸 We arrive at the first part which is a horizontal equipped section and takes us to the start of the via ferrata.

Inicio | Start – VF La Muela

🇪🇸 Aquí empezamos la via ferrata.

🇺🇸 Here we start the via ferrata La Muela.

Final | End – VF La Muela

🇪🇸 Tras pasar tramos verticales y algunos desplomes, llegamos al final de la vía ferrata.

🇺🇸 After having passed the vertical sections and some overhangs, we reach the end of the via ferrata.

Plaza de la Iglesia | Church square

🇪🇸 Para volver al coche, tenemos que pasar por el pueblo de Villahermosa del Río. Pasamos por la plaza del pueblo y la Iglesia.

🇺🇸 To return to the car, we have to go through the town of Villahermosa del Río. We pass through the town square and the Church.

Fuente | Fountain

🇪🇸 Por la misma plaza del pueblo, se encuentra una fuente de agua potable, ideal para los días de calor.

🇺🇸 In the same town square, there is a tap with drinking water, ideal for hot days.

Izquierda – Grieta | Left – Ravine

🇪🇸 Bajamos por la carretera y nos desviamos por la izquierda para entrar en la cueva, que nos llevará hasta el coche.

🇺🇸 We go down the road and turn left to enter the cave, which will take us to the car.

Derecha – Vuelta a la senda | Right – Back on the trail

🇪🇸 Pasando la cueva, bajamos por la senda y nos encontramos de nuevo con la senda del inicio.

🇺🇸 Once through the cave, we go down the path and come back to the main road that will take us to the car.
