Itinerary description
Accomodation: 400som for food, 250 per meal, and 150 per breakfast shall be fine. Loads of yurts, it should be not a problem to find a place to stay, if you go there self supported. The weather was not too cold as of mid September, a polar, something to cover your brains and toes shall be enough. Somewhat, this place is portrayed as somewhere in-accessible, but that's not true. In the daytime, there were cars passing every half an hour, it should be possible to hitch them for a price (500som pp?).
The road going to the lake is in very good condition, any car can make it to the top, but if your car is precious, you cannot make more than 15km/h because of the small rocks. Our driver had a Ssang Yong, and did 50km/h, and it took us 2hours to climb to the lake.
The prices of the tour companies at Kockor very competive; 3600som including drive, yurt stay (sharing with our driver), lunch, breakfast, dinner. No need do pre-arrange anything; just go to Kockor and they can arrange a car in 20mins.
The lake is beautiful; check the moon phases before going, full moon means no stars.
We really liked the lake, and it was I believe worth the price, but for anyone who's intrested in self supported things or on a tight budget;
a. You can hike the entire length to the lake in 3 easy days, or 2 hard days, staying on yurts on your way. Check tourism offices for offers.
b. A shorter 1 day hike to Köl Ukok (Treasure Chest Lake) is 1500som including accomodation, lunch dinner and breakfast, and you'll be hiking on your own.
