Itinerary description

This easy greenbelt trail starts and ends at the Alphen greenbelt trail parking lot on Alphen drive next to the Alphen Botique Hotel and Spa. From here the trail follows the Diep River towards the mountain. The path is very easy to follow and there is little to no noticible gradient except the very last stretch of the Diep River section as one ends near Southern Cross drive. The trail as one would expect for a greenbelt is very lush and shaded with tall trees on all sides of the river. There are grassy open park areas with benches frequented by dog walkers and families on picnics. One can choose to walk on either side of the river for most of the Alphen section, there are a couple of bridges and cross points to use if you wish to cross to the other side at any point. After reaching a large open area one will have to cross Brommersvlei road, this is the official end of the Alphen trail and the start of the Diep River Greenbelt trail. The Diep River section was much quieter and there is path on only one side of the river. There are a few well constructed wooden bridges to cross before the section with the most incline begins. The incline continues under tall pines and crossing tar roads before ending at the sign and security checkpoint on Southern Cross drive. From here one can turn around as we did, or even walk a short way to the Cecelia forest trail and on to the start of the Constantia Nek trail to do the Eagles nest or Cecilia Waterfall. At the traffic circle there is even the option of a few coffee shops and pubs for refreshments. This is a great walk if you are looking for something quick, easy and not at all technical. The scenery under the canopy of trees is great and the trail seems well supported and safety in numbers applies. There are also sections with cameras and security guards for extra measure which is always a welcomed sight. That being said this trail can get quiet and do not take liberties when it comes to security. Alphen trail is well trafficked while the Diep River section less so. That being said just make sure to take the necessary precautions as always.

This is a nice trail to do if you just want to stretch your legs as it's nothing intense. There was a good mobile coffee trailer and a lot of people walking their dogs.
