SANTA MARIA DEL MAR
Title: Basilica of Santa Maria del Mar. Chronology: 1329 (beginning of the construction) - 1384 (first mass). Authors: Berenguer de Montagut i Ramon Despuig. Thematic description: Basilica. It was canonge Bernat Llull’s initiative to build it. At first, the parishioners paid for it, but the contribution of the labor unions was important too. Technical description: Gothic. It’s one of the best catalan gothic work and looking from the architectural point it is simple. A large carcass delimits a big interior space with straight and continuous surface, it doesn’t have a lot of sculpture ornamentation.
Plaça del Rei
Title: Plaça del Rei. Chronology: Second half of the 14th century. Author: Reign of Martí the Human. Thematic description: This square was built by a project that aimed to create a large square where to celebrate tournaments and eliminate the usual market. Technical Description: Gothic. This is a rectangular square surrounded by gothic buildings and closed on all sides, except for the southwestern corner, where it connects with the cathedral.
SANTA ÀGATA
Title: Capella de Santa Àgata. Chronology: 13th century. Author: James II. Thematic description: Chapel. It went throug some transformations (a school, a decoration store for the Liceu, a workshop of the Vallmitjana sculptors, an ancient museum, worship...) now it is an exhibition hall of the MUHBA. It has an important retable by Jaume Huguet. Technical description: Gothic. The chapel of Santa Àgata de Barcelona is a Gothic building, located in Plaça del Rei in the center of the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona.
CATEDRAL
Title: Catedral de la Santa Creu i Santa Eulàlia (Catedral de Barcelona). Chronology: 1298 - 1420. Authors: Josep Oriol Mestres and Augusto Font Carreras Thematic Description: It is devoted to the Holy Cross and to Saint Eulàlia. It was built on a Romanic church, which was built on a paleochristian church. Technical Description: The cathedral was built using Gothic architcture and the walls were made with stone from Montjuic.
SANTA MARIA DEL PI
Title: Basílica de Santa Maria del Pi. Chronology: 1320 - 1391. Authors: Guillem Abiell, Francesc Basset, Bartomeu Mas, Pere Castelló, Pau Mateu. Thematic Description: It's name comes from the sculpture of the virgin made of a pine's wood they found near the church. Santa Joaquima de Vedruna was baptised in this church. Technical Description: Gothic. It has the biggest rose window in the world. The window was destroyed in a fire in 1936 and rebuilded some years later. There’s only one large and high aisle.
