Casco Histórico de Alhaurin el Grande
This is a circular walk taking in the historical centre of Alhaurin el Grande plus a few little extras.
I’m keeping the walk medium because there are a few uphill climbs.
It starts from the Parque Ferial and main bus stop, opposite Antonio Gala Municipal theatre. There is plenty of parking around (except on Thursday when Alhaurin holds its market here).
The first thing we come across is the Moorish archway – Arco del Cobertizo. It formed part of the defensive wall from the end of the 12th century. Right opposite is the parish church Ntra. Sra. de la Encarnación. It was built in 1505. In front of it is the square Plaza Baja.
From here you have the option to go to the tourist office for maps etc.
Carry on down to the Ermita de San Sebastian and its Plaza. Keep going down and you will come to the fountain Fuente de los Doce Caños (also known as Fuente Lucena).
Next it’s a hidden little gem, the Mirador de Huerto Mateo, which overlooks the Guadalhorce valley. Next you pass the cemetery and its church on your right, as we go out of our way a little to get the the Ermita Cristo de las Agonias.
Next we head back to Calle Convento, where you will pass a fountain before getting to the church Vera Cruz del Convento, the Town hall and also Plaza Convento. (There are caves underneath the church, but you have to book an appointment with the town hall next door to see them).
Next it’s an uphill climb to Barrio de San Antón with its shrine of the same name. From here make your way down to the arch Portón de San Rafael. Next stop is Plaza Alta on Calle Cruz, where the Bread museum is also. The bakery El Colmanero makes lovely cakes (this is a good stop off for coffee and cake).
From here we head back uphill to a newish park – Parque de la Libertad.
Going downhill now, to the famous roundabout La Cruz, with its many bars around, and then finally making your way back to the feria ground..
