Itinerary description
We had a glorious day for our annual group trek/climb with hardly a cloud in the sky. We had planned to walk the perimeter of the island but found the ascent of Knockmore much more difficult than anticipated. The climb up was very steep and for some of the group the steep descent was even more of a challenge. When the lighthouse came into view we were able to see that we faced a few more climbs so we decided to head due east and picked up unmade roads which probably cut about 4km off our planned route.
All in all it was a very satisfying day. We visited a small 13th century church and enjoyed magnificent views throughout. From the top of Knockmore we could see Croaghaun on Achill, Nephin, Croagh Patrick, Mweelrea and the Twelve Bens, as well as the islands of Inishturk, Inishbofin and Inishshark
