Colón – Puerta del Colodro, Córdoba
This circular walk incorporates Paseos from Andando Córdoba, Paseo Colón and Paseo Puerta del Colodro.
The walk passes a multitude of sites, I will name a few.
Iglesia de Santa Ana, Plaza Tendillas, Parroquia San Miguel, Plaza de Capuchino and Santuario de los Dolores, Plaza de las Doblas, Jardines de la Merced, Torre de la Malmuerta.
Then the return journey starts from Puerta del Colodro,
Iglesia Santa Maria de Aguas Santas, Plaza del Conde de Priego, Palacio de Viana (entrance 7 euros), Parroquia de San Andrés, Casa de los Luna, Palacio de Orive and gardens (free), Iglesia San Pablo, Ayuntamiento de Córdoba, Templo Paez, Museo Arqueolóico, and finally Patio de los Naranjos.
There is a lot to see and explore on this route so take your time and enjoy.
Torre de la Malmuerta - is an albarrana tower that is wrapped in legend. Popular tradition assures that the name of the tower is due to the death of a noble lady from Cordoba at the hands of her jealous husband.
Apart from the myth, this tower, which was built on a previous Islamic construction, stands in the fifteenth century. It is linked to the wall through a semicircular arch, under which you can see a legend inscribed with data alluding to its construction. Inside, several stairs lead to the Adarve and, higher up, to the only room of the building, with a vault and open to the outside by loopholes.
Puerta del Colodro - This gate was built after the Christian conquest of the city. It underwent several reconstructions, being open and closed whenever an epidemic was suffered.1It was demolished in 1882.
In 2009, during the renovation works of the Plaza del Colodro, the remains of the Colodro gate were discovered, as well as part of the adjacent walls Part of the remains, including the door, have been integrated into the new square where they can be visited.
Its name is due to the fact that on January 24, 1236, for the place in which the door would later be built, an Almogávar who knew Arabic called Álvaro Colodro, a native of Cobeña, climbed the wall and surprised the sentries, whom he threw into the field so that his friends had just killed them, which triggered the Christian conquest of the city.
Palacio de Viana - In the Plaza de Don Gome stands this majestic palace, whose dependencies are developed around twelve magnificent courtyards and a fantastic garden. The different floral species decorate and perfume every corner of the bombastic museum. The last Marchioness of Viana, Sofia of Lancaster, knew how to maintain the exquisite origin of this fourteenth-century palace.
The multiple rooms of the Viana Palace house numerous collections of all kinds (paintings, crockery, mosaics, tapestries, tiles, firearms). The fabulous works of art that are exhibited in this enclosure make this visit one of the most constructive in Córdoba. Highlights include the collection of guadamecíes and the great library of the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries.
Palacio de Orive - It is the most beautiful example of Córdoban civil architecture of the Renaissance. Made by Hernán Ruiz II in 1560, the cover with decorated arches is the most interesting aspect of the set. It is part of a unique set within the historic center of Córdoba, the block of Orive. This palace is the current headquarters of the Delegation of Culture of the City Council of Córdoba.
