Description from https://www.myswitzerland.com/en-ch/destinations/einsiedeln/:

Eindiedeln is the most important place
of pilgrimage dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Switzerland. The high valley of Einsiedeln located in the heart of Central Switzerland is characterised by moors and Lake Sihl, the biggest reservoir in Switzerland in terms of area. The winter sports region of Hoch Ybrig is just a few kilometres away.

Imposing centre of Einsiedeln and destination for countless pilgrims is the baroque monastery dating from the 18th century. The Benedictine monastery has a history of just over one thousand years. Since the Middle Ages Einsiedeln with its «Black Madonna» has been one of the most important places of pilgrimage in Europe. The Jakobsweg (St. James Path) also runs through the Einsiedeln area. The many pilgrims' hostels of the past nowadays have become hotels for holidaymakers and pilgrims.

Alongside fascinating guided tours of the Abbey and village, a visit to the newly-opened dairy plant or the gingerbread museum, Einsiedeln's attractions are likely to include sampling local gourmet delights – for example at a 'Genuine SCHWYZ' fine dining restaurant.

Winter

The three smallish ski regions of Einsiedeln, Hoch Ybrig and Brunni-Mythen are located in idyllic open Alpine foothill countryside at altitudes between 900 to 1900 metres above sea level and are suitable for skiers and snowboarders alike. And there is also a halfpipe and fun park. The Ybrig ski school is the oldest ski school in Switzerland. Families appreciate the short distances to the ski regions, especially from the Zurich area. The Einsiedeln ski jump (built in 2005) can be used for training and competitions in summer. The big cross-country skiing track area and varied possibilities for ski tours complete the range of activities on offer.

Summer

In summer the destination offers an extensive hiking trail network (400km), but also routes for bikers (250km, partly signposted). A 18-hole golf course and agriculture trail are further examples of what's on offer in the summer. And on poor-weather-days you can enjoy Einsiedeln's cultural highlights including, for example, the Mineral Museum or Gingerbread Museum, as well as lots of other sights.

The area of Einsiedeln in the heart of early Switzerland offers a host of excursion possibilities, such as visits to the Zoo in Golday or the Children's Zoo in Rapperswil, trips by mountain railway up the Rigi, a cruise on Lakes Lucerne, Zug or Zurich, or entering the Mouta Valley «Hölloch», one of the biggest cave systems in the world.

Ski jumping complex

History (From http://www.skisprungschanzen.com/EN/Ski+Jumps/SUI-Switzerland/06-Central+Switzerland/Einsiedeln/0530-Schanzen+Einsiedeln): The first hill in Eschbach near Einsiedeln was opened in 2001, but only three years later the K20 "trial ski jump" was demolished already. In 2003, the works for a new Swiss national ski jumping complex, which includes four hills K105, K70, K45 and K25, started. The hills, which also got a ski lift and snow cannons, were opened in July 2005. While the hills progressed, a landslip happened, so the works were delayed and the budget had to be extended. Furthermore the judges' tower had to be modified after the works were finished, because the view onto the athletes was not good enough. After two years of construction time and 14.5m SFr, a modern ski jumping complex was completed, but the financial cost was six million Francs above the original estimation and budget. In the course of the building, the Ski Club could count on the support of the members, which installed the plastic mattings on all hills. The complex is the main training center of Switzerland in summer, beside Kandersteg. The K105 is now used annually for COC and Summer Grand Prix. But it is also criticized, because of a lack of wind protection. In 2009, the Grand Prix competition had to be cancelled after the first round, because the wind conditions were irregular. Also FIS-Cup and Alps Cup are making regular stops at Einsiedeln. Originally the hills were named after the sponsors AKAD-, Swisscom- and KPT-Schanzen, but in May 2009 the HS 117 was dubbed “Andreas-Küttel-Schanze” and the HS 77 “Simon-Ammann-Schanze”. On the small KPT-Schanze, “ski jumping for anyone” is offered. Beside the hills, the infrastructure at Eschbach was improved with the construction of a sports and ice skating hall. The K105 has got a very special highlight: the shower rooms and cabins are placed underneath the outrun. The hill has, like the K45, floodlights, so night competitions can be staged there. The "KPT-Schanzen" are natural hills, while the two larger ones have concrete inrun towers and the K105 even an artificial knoll. The ski jumping complex hit the news headlines in September 2007, when the operation company had to file for bankruptcy after several financial problems. On January 1, 2009 the newly founded "Schanzen Einsiedeln GmbH" took over the rights and property ownership of the ski jumps. Even private ski jumping fans and public organizations hold shares of the hills now, just as the name-giver and world champion of Liberec 2009 Andreas Küttel, who resigned in spring 2011. In order to ensure the operations of Schanzen Einsiedeln, in June 2021, the 16-years old inrun tracks of all four ski jumps were renewed. The necessary funds of ca. 800,000 Francs were acquired through public subsidies and a crowdfunding project.

Abbey of Einsiedeln, square and Mary fountain

After St. Peter's Square in Rome, Einsiedeln's Klosterplatz (Monastery Square) is the largest contiguous public space in front of a church in Europe. The square has undergone many changes over the years and is even now under reconstruction. It will have been completely renovated by 2020. Today's Klosterplatz was built twelve years after the magnificent abbey was built. Previously the monastery had been shielded from the village by a walled terrace. Following the village fire of 1680, the distance between the village and the monastery was specified in writing and has remained so ever since. Fountain of Our Lady Like the pilgrims, take a sip from each of the 14 spouts: the water has had healing properties ascribed to it. The Fountain of Our Lady stands in the middle of Klosterplatz beneath the arcades. A fountain has probably stood here since the founding of the monastery. The current one dates from 1752

From https://www.swissinfo.ch/eng/madonna-s-fashion_famous-einsiedeln-statue-gets-dressed-up/41828900 : The Black Madonna has graced the chapel of the baroque monastery in Einsiedeln, eastern Switzerland, for some 200 years, attracting pilgrims from all over the world. She owes her extensive wardrobe to donations from far and wide, some given as thanks by people who believed their prayers were answered after visiting the Madonna. A book entitled “Madonna’s Fashion” has now been published. The author is the Benedictine monk Gerold Zenoni, who is also responsible for changing the Black Madonna’s broidered clothes roughly every two weeks, choosing from the 30 dresses from the Madonna’s wardrobe. The Black Madonna is part of the monastery of Einsiedeln, which is more than 1,000 years old. The sculpture was created by an unknown artist and destroyed in 1798 by French invaders. It was rebuilt in 1817 and turned black through dust and soot from the burning of incense, oil and candles. Every year the monastery is visited by up to one million pilgrims from all over the world. According to other sources (https://www.myswitzerland.com/en-ch/experiences/benedictine-monastery-with-black-madonna/ or https://shrines-of-europe.com/city/einsiedeln/) The famous Black Madonna dating to the 15th century.
