Itinerary description
A simple hike through the El Choco National Park.
Please note that the park contains several caves and in some you can swim. However, you need to visit the caves with a guide. This hike just takes you through the park for a nice hike. If you interested in visiting the caves, you'll find several guides at the park entrance that will guide you around for a fee.
Or you can book it in advance on: http://www.iguanamama.com/el-choco-scenic-hikes-dominican-republic
Also note that for a national park, there are a lot of small houses, meadows and barb wire along the way. So don't expect a pristine environment. I guess the main reason to make this a national park is to protect the caves, but it's still a nice walk in a very different landscape.
The track is quite easy to follow and there are a few options to make the track shorter:
- If you follow the complete track, it's about 11.5km and it starts on the main road of Cabarete
- You can park at the park entrance, making the track 1km shorter.
- If you think that 11.5km (or 10.5km) is too long, you have the option to follow a few waypoints labelled "short cut" that reduce the track to 6.7km (or even to 5.7km if starting from the park entrance).
