Itinerary description
It is the park I often took a walk and jogged when I was going to Kanagawa University during mid 80s. For Yokohama newcomers, however, this park is not easy to locate because the park does not face any broad trunk roads including Kyu-Tsunashima Kaido traversing through Rokkakubashi Shopping street. To get there follow the route as shown in this wikiloc trail. This park also incorporates the elevation differences of hilltop area and valley area the lowest part of which is a pond called Shirahata-ike.
Waypoints
Hakuraku Station
One of the railway stations of Tokyu Toyoko Line closest to Kanagawa University, Rokkakubashi Shopping Street and Shirahata-ike / Shinohara-enchi Parks.
Rokkakubashi Shopping Street
Nearby the Hakuraku Station runs the Tsunashima-kaido the old highway the part of which is Rokkakubashi Street, one of the very old-fashioned shopping streets in Yokohama. From the intersection turning left leads to Rokkakubashi Street and turning rightward leads to Shirahata-ike and Shinohara Enchi Parks.
Migawari Jizo Statues
Migawari Jizo or Substitute Jizos are a group of Bodhisattva statues placed alongside the road or inside the Buddhist temples believed to partake the bad fortune or illness for the worshipers. This migawari jizo based on the legend that the lives of the children on the road were saved by these statues hundreds of years ago. Today these statues are housed and respected by the local people as the guardian statues of the town.
Approach to the park
Actually either Shirahata-ike Park and Shinohara Enchi are not directly in contact with any of trunk roads including Kyu Tsunashima Kaido. There are two approaches to the park the one passing close to the Post Office and the other is this one. Walking about a minute you will reach the pond area of Shirahata-ike Park
Shirahata-ike Park
This is a nice community park with a dike pond, children's playground. This park is also one of the popular places in Yokohama to view Cherry blossoms during early April.
Entrance to Shinohara Enchi
Shirahataike Park and Shinohara-enchi are connected each other and collectively serve as a huge park. While Shirahata-ike Park is a municipal park managed by the Yokohama City, Shinohara-enchi is run by Kanagawa Prefecture. One of the joints is at the children's playground of the Shirahataike Park with a slide and gymnastic bars for children.
Children's Playground and a Swimming Pool
After walking from Shirahataike Park for a few minutes. You will find a swimming pool for children (closed in 2018) and a children's playground with swing sets is nearby. *2022 update. Former site of the swimming pool is to be used as multi-purpose ground.
Westernmost Part of the Park
Walking past the children's playground, you will find the narrow trail flanked by neatly trimmed azelea plants leading to the western entrance to the Shonohara-enchi.
Southwestern Part of the Shinohara Enchi
Southwestern Part of the Shinohara-enchi is facing the residential area with condos. It is also densely wooded area home to a wide variety of insects, birds. The area also has a lot of old cherry trees. The downward trail is very steep.
Observation Walk Trail
Walking back to Shihata-ike Pond you will find a walk trail for nature observation in Shirahata-ike Pond. You can enjoy viewing migratory birds, dragonflies, insects and some aquatic plants such as lotuses.
