Lagoa das Furnas - Sao MIguel (Açores)

Trail itinerary (loop): Caldeiras da Lagoa das Furnas (208 m) – Furnas Monitoring & Research Centre – Nossa Senhora das Vitórias (287 m) – Crossroad with road R1-1 – Caldeiras da Lagoa das Furnas (208 m).

Nice and quiet walk around a lake of volcanic origin and one of the most impressive countryside areas in the Saõ Miguel island. This island is the biggest one of the nine islands forming part of the Açores archipelago.

This trail follows the path all around the lake starting on the north side next to the hot spring area. It is very interesting to stop for a while and watch local families gathering to enjoy the day and have the traditional “cozido” cooked in the area of the Caldeiras, taking advantage of the hot spring and steaming fumaroles.

An unpaved track goes along the west border of the lake offering you fantastic views of the forest and the lake bank. Some diversions from the main path also allow you to get lost in the atmosphere of the wild forest surrounding all the area. On the south side of the lake you will follow a “pavée” road along some isolated local “quintas” and a research center (dedicated to the preservation of the lake ecosystems and the local uses) before arriving to the “igreja” Nossa Senhora das Vitórias. The rest of the trail follows the sidewalk along the road R1-1.

This route can also be enlarged with other wider loops including the nice village of Furnas.

Paseo muy agradable y tranquilo alrededor del Lago de Furnas, una de las áreas más bonitas en la isla de Saõ Miguel, que es la isla más grande las nueve que forman el archipiélago delas Azores.

Esta ruta resigue el camino que rodea el lago y se inicia en la zona de fumarolas conocida como Caldeiras. Muy interesante entretenerse un rato viendo cómo las familias de la región se reúnen y preparan su tradicional cocido aprovechando el calor natural a flor de terreno.

Un amplio sendero recorre el lado Oeste del lago entre el frondoso y verde bosque y muestra grandes vistas del lago. En el lado Sur se camina por un carretera de adoquines muy tranquila, se pasa al lado de algunas quintas y un centro de investigación de la naturaleza antes de alcanzar la iglesia de Nossa Senhora das Vitórias. El resto del recorrido se realiza por una zona bien habilitada al lado de la carretera R1-1.

Este recorrido se puede ampliar con otras rutas circulares por la zona que pueden llegar hasta la bella población de Furnas.
