Buçaco National Forest - Living Heritage, Magic Nature
Ranked as Public Interest Building, the Buçaco monumental set mobilizes a rich heritage of exception. At the core formed by Buçaco Palace Hotel and the Santa Cruz Convent join the housing chapels, the devotion chapels of and Steps that make up Via Crucis, the Fence with the Doors, the Military Museum and the monument commemorating the Battle of Buçaco, the cruises, the fountains (surface to the Cold Fountain with its monumental staircase) and the tanks, the viewpoints (the Cruz Alta offers a privileged view over the entire region between Coimbra and Serra do Caramulo) or the forest houses.
Currently it lodges 105 hectares and has one of the best dendrological collections of the Europe, with about 250 species of trees and shrubs with notable examples. It is one of the richest forests in natural, architectural and cultural heritage; it can be divided into three landscape units: Arboretum, Gardens and Valley of Ferns, and Relic Forest.
The National Forest Buçaco provides food, shelter and refuge for more than hundred and fifty species of vertebrates, some of great conservation value, such as Iberian endemic or protected species.
The biodiversity found in Buçaco expresses the uniqueness and heritage value of this magical space and requires its preservation.
