Walking in urban parks during heated summer in Nagoya is generally a not good idea. So I chose the shorter way possible to get the glimpse of one of the most spacious parks in Nagoya. It is 1-1 1/2 hour course fitting for evening walk. The park has misty fountain to beat the summer heat. A number of nice objects for instagram photos. A huge pond home to wild and migratory birds. Large space for BBQ, and a dog park. It also has nice cycling/jogging and walking courses.
Waypoints
Shonai Ryokuchikoen Station
Shonai Ryokuchi Koen Station is a subway station of Tsurumai Line about 10 minutes train ride from Osukannon Station. Get out from Exit #2 to go directly into the park.
Misty Fountain
When I went to Shonai Ryokuchi Park, the temperature may have gone up to 32 degrees Centigrade a bit cooler than the rest of heated Nagoya summer. This misty fountain is a nice way to beat the summer heat particularly for children.
Bell of International Friendship
Donated to this park by Nagoya Honmaru Lions Club to enhance the friendship between sister cities of Nagoya in March 2001.
Mount Fuji Shaped Fountain
This fountain shaped like the top of Mount Fuji is located at the far corner of children's playground near the gateball courts.
Gateball Courts
Gateball is a team sport similar to croquet using mallet and balls. This ball game is particularly popular among senior citizens. This park has six gateball courts but in most cases unused by the players and giving another play field for children.
Gateball Courts 2
The area is really huge and this photo is viewed from the place about 100 meters past the previous waypoint.
Getting to Hoshi Shrine
There is a narrow road leading to the inner levee of Shonai River is also the way from the park to the Hoshi Shrine known for its local legend very similar to that of Cowhead and Weaver Girl but has tragic ending. Like many of these Hoshi shrines this Shinto shrine also hold Star Festival.
Boat Pond
Although it is named Boat pond, there were no pedal boats on this pond when I visited the park on August 11. It seemed the visitors were much more interested in barbecuing than pedal boating on the summer day.
Rose Beds
It is not particularly rose season in August but I found some of the variants blooming in mid summer.
Returned to the Fountain
It was past four p.m. and the fountain had already stopped running.
