The entire island of Miyajima has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.
Also known as Itsukushima, it is located within the Hiroshima Bay, inland sea of Japan. It is part of the city of Hatsukaichi in Hiroshima Prefecture.
It is famous for its sanctuary, which is also a world heritage site and is managed by the Japanese government and protected by severe conservation standards.
Deer and monkeys are free on the island and the former are considered sacred by the Shinto native religion because they were considered messengers of the gods. The highest point on the island is Mount Misen of 535 meters.
It has a good number of trails to do, even combined with a cable car that goes up to Mount Misen.
Most visitors will only spend a few hours or the whole day, others decide to stay to sleep and be able to enjoy the island with more intensity.
The sunset over the sanctuary must be wonderful with its torii submerged in the sea at high tide. At the moment it is in rehabilitation and covered with scaffolding, so I could not see it, even so, it does not detract from the visit, because everything else impresses
This tourist route corresponds to the visit of both the Ikutushima temple and the Daishon-in temple.
Pavilions and pagodas honoring various deities are sharpened along the mountain to climb to its top: Mount Misen, which can also be accessed by telespherical.
The trip on the JR Ferry dws from Hiroshima to Mijayima is free if you have the JR-Pass, and its frequency is very high during most of the day.
