Itinerary description
"At least as far back as the 11'th Century, the summit of Montjuic was the site of a beacon or lookout tower that warned the city of approaching ships and signalled times of siege. As a consequence of the Revolt of Catalonia (1640-1652), Barcelona City engaged the master Gervasi Martorell to construct a small fort, which passed to the Spanish Crown after the war. From 1671-1697 the fort was transformed into a great fortress in accordance with plans of engineers Lorenzo Tossi and Josep Chafrion. After the War of the Spanish Succession (1700-1714) the Castle was modernised and enlarged by military engineer Juan Martin Cermeno. These alterations, made between 1753 and 1779, gave Montjuic Castle its present appearance."
Waypoints
Arrival Bus Stop
Before going to the Castle we found a good breakfast place on the north side of Placa Espana. Then we boarded a regular city bus on the north side of Placa Espana, near a Line 1 "Espana" Metro Station exit. The bus climbed switchback roads up the hill, arriving at this way-point location near the Montjuïc Fort entrance. The arrival bus stop is under a cable car that links Barcelona city center with Montjuïc. The saved track starts here. The bus back down the hill departs from the same location. Metro tickets also work on the bus.
Montjuic Castle Entrance
It's a gentle incline up a pedestrian road from the arrival bus stop to the Castle entrance. There are small parks and gardens near the entrance, with great views over the cruise ship terminal and out to the Mediterranean Sea. Old artillery pieces are on display near here. The Castle has a small admission charge, that includes a guide map and other information.
Seaside walk, Port view
This is the start of a long walk below the ramparts on the seaward side. There are tremendous views over the major container shipping port of Barcelona. A somewhat sheltered place to enjoy direct winter sun.
Prison Section of Ramparts
"In the nineteenth century, the Castle became the main military prison in the City.... (see attached photo "The Castle Dungeons" for a more detailed account).
City views
There is an Archery Club that practices in a historical section of the northern moat. The club website (linked from google Maps) suggests that lessons or practice here can be arranged.
Walking paths
The track follows part of an extensive walking path network, below the seaward ramparts and on to a forested area, and then around the outside of the castle in a clockwise direction.
Forest
Typical pictures in a forest area farther to the west, and continuing onto the outer ramparts on the west side.
