Olvera Ruta Historico
Olvera is a very quaint white village 1 ½ hours from Malaga.
It has a lot of history and has been placed on the map due to the 36Km Via Verde path that used to be an old railway line.
This small historic route takes you around some of the major historical buildings and sights.
The route heads up to the two iconic structures, the church N S Encarnacion (this large neo-classical church was built in 1841) and the Arab castle (built in the 12th century). Both situated around Plaza de la Iglesia, which also houses La Villa which was once a granary, and is now the tourist office.
This whole area is known as La Villa which made up the old Arab town which has narrow stone paved streets.
From here we head down to the Town hall, which was originally built in 1783, knocked down and re-opened in 1968.
From here you head towards the Sacred Heart garden. There has been a hanging garden here for centuries.
Climbing the steps up through ivy-Cove–red rock and small terraces will take you to the statute of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It’s a great viewing point looking out over Olvera. There is also an aviary in the gardens.
From here you head back down Calvario Street to Plaza de la Concordia where the walk started.
Parking is not a big problem in Olvera. There is plenty parking along Calle Bellavista.
