Sant Nicolau Church
The painting of Saint Nicholas that crowns the main altar reredos is possibly the image that crowned the old 15th century Gothic one attributed to Valencian artist Miquel Alcanyís. The painting depicts the saint as pope, with rich fabrics, including the cope used to represent prophets.
Monument of Antonio Maura
Antoni Maura was such an important figure in Majorca that a committee was formed to create a monument on the year of his death. This was inaugurated in 1929. Sculptor Marià Benlliure was commissioned with the project and he made a full-figure bronze representation of the politician, with a white marble female figure that represents an allegory to truth.
Meeting Point V Sculpture
This reinforced concrete sculpture is by Basque sculptor Eduardo Chillida and it was made between 1973 and 1975. Because it is so big, it can be viewed from multiple different angles and although it weighs 15 tons, its design gives it the impression of weightlessness and a certain precarious sense of balance.
Basílica de Sant Miquel - Mare de Déu de la Salut
According to tradition, this statue of Our Lady of Good Health accompanied King James on his voyage to conquer Majorca. However, everything indicates that it was made later, possibly in the 16th century. The current chapel was built in the 17th century when the statue came to be known as Our Lady of Good Health due to her intercession in epidemics and in an episode of the plague.
El darrer vestit a l'ampla Sculpture
This marble sculpture was made by sculptor Tomàs Vila in 1951. The first place where it stood, at the junction of the Avingudes and Carrer d’Aragó, caused a lot of controversy and in 1963 it was moved to its current location at Olivar Market. It shows an old man dressed in calçons bufats, the name of these 18th century trousers. On the original base, there were bas-reliefs representing the seasons of the year.
El Virrei Cross Monument
El Virrei cross was erected in 1645 in memory of viceroy José Pérez de Pomar y Torres de Mendoza who died when he fell from his horse into the moat flanking the city walls. The current cross is a replica since the original is in Bellver Castle Museum. Its location was also changed, because it used to stand closer to Plaça d’Espanya.
Monument to King James Monument
The monument to King James 1st stands on the spot where Santa Margalida Gate used to be, the gate through which King James’ troops passed when they entered the city of Palma. After the controversy caused by the gate’s disappearance, money was raised to make the statue, with a competition to select the artist who would make it. Although he did not initially win the competition, Enric Clarasó made this statue of the king on horseback, on a stone pedestal, with the figure of an Almogavar soldier at his feet.
Pendiente del reloj Sculpture
Pendiente del reloj (Eyes on the Watch)is a hyper-realistic work by Valladolid artist Belén González which won the 1992 Santa Lucía Sculpture Award. It is a sculpture of a well wrapped-up woman with a briefcase and bags, standing and looking at the wristwatch on her left hand.
Contrasting Solid (The Tube) Monument
This square is popularly known as Plaça del Tub (Tube Square) due to the big red tube that crosses the middle of it. This architectural feature was placed there when the square was created in 1983 by architects Pere Rabassa and Eugenio de la Fuente.
Crist de la Sang Sculpture???
Sant Crist de la Sang is one of the most highly revered statues in Majorca. It is a 17th century Baroque statue of Christ, restored in 2003 and used to close the Easter Thursday procession in Palma.
