Plaza Nueva – Mirador San Nicolás, Albaicin
This was a lovely stroll, mainly uphill to the Mirador de San Nicolás, which overlooks Granada, the Alhambra, the Alcazaba, the Palaces and the Generalife.
Please note that walking through some of these beautiful cobbled narrow streets plays havoc with the GPS signal.
The route starts from Plaza Nueva, which actually is one of the oldest squares in Granada.
Turn right onto calle Elvira, then right again onto calle Caldereia Vieja, making your way onto Cuesta San Gregorio, where you pass Palacio Conde de Cabra and Casa de los Reyes.
Then you pass Placeta de Norot, where you can see a bit of the Alcazaba and Sierra Nevada in the distance.
Then you turn right onto calle Aljibe de Gato, then left onto Cuesta de Maria de la Miel, and then onto Camino Nuevo de San Nicolás, which takes you to the Mirador.
As you can image, because the views are spectacular this is a a very busy and popular spot. There is a restaurant just below which looks popular also.
From here you pass the San Nicolás church to the arch – Arco de las Presas. Then retrace your steps back onto calle Aljibe de la Gitana zig-zagging down cobbled streets, passing the Palacio Daralhorra, eventually turning left onto Cuesta de Abarqueros. You then pick up calle Elvira again, passing Iglesia de San Andrés.
Turn right onto calle Carcel Bajo which passes the Cathedral. Next to the Cathedral is the Palacio Arzobispal and Iglesia del Sagrario.
Keep going and you enter a different world that of the Alcaiceria. It is an Aladdin’s cave of old shops and alleyways. Going straight across you come to the Corral del Carbón, which is an amazing historical building.
Then finely turn left onto calle Reyes Católicos passing Plaza Isabel Católica with her statute. From here it’s a short stroll back to Plaza Nueva.
The beauty of the Albaicin is that there are so many nooks and crannies to explore. It’s such an historical place and great fun to explore. The panoramic views transport you back to medieval times
