Itinerary description
The walk was really pretty. Lucky with the weather as the only rain was from walking underneath small showers of waterfalls. Walk in the mountains starting with wide paths along the levadas. lots of large stones and roots to climb over so we all had to watch our feet. The distance was about 6km each way, along a very windy path towards the waterfall at the end. After about 3km there were 3 tunnels. The first was about 50 metres, the next was about 100 metres and very dark and waterlogged underfoot. The third tunnel was very long, about 250 metres with lots of big puddles and holes underfoot plus a very low roof in places. I had to duck down and crouch to avoid being hit on the head. The path gradually became more narrow. It was just the levada and adjacent concrete/stone path with a metal barrier alongside. The drop was very high so I just didn’t look! It was all very challenging, exciting and adventurous. After about 6km we reached the waterfall that is about 110 meters high. The narrow paths and long drops seemed almost more scary from this direction. I kept to a good pace but nevertheless the return walk took about 1 hour 30 mins. Overall, today’s walk was great. Exhilarating, exciting, dramatic scenery, memorable and adventurous. Not suitable for those with vertigo or who don't like dark enclosed tunnels.
