Juma Mosque

Juma Mosque is located in the Dabbaghkhana neighborhood in the center of the city. The mosque was built in the 19th century as a complex with an underground bath and a madrasa building. The exact date of construction of the mosque is not known. According to what is said, the prayer hall was first built in 1900 under the leadership of religious figures. Based on the date engraved on the stone, it can be said that the construction of the mosque was completed in 1914 with the construction of an additional porch, cell and minaret. Later, a madrasa was built 1.85 meters from the mosque. The madrasah was connected to the porch of the mosque, so there was access from the madrasah to the second floor of the mosque. At a distance of 1.7 meters from the western wall of the madrasa, Abdulsalam built a bath (Underground bath) that is actually included in the mosque complex. After the Soviet occupation, i.e. after 1920, the minaret of the mosque and the part connected to the madrasa were demolished.

At one time, the first floor of this building was Mammadsadiq Aliyev's commercial office, and the top floor was his office. Currently, the building functions as a club named after the National Hero of Azerbaijan Chingiz Mustafayev. The stone building has three floors. The basement has been repaired and it functions as an Ethnography museum. On the first floor, as in the Soviet era, there is a cinema hall, and in the other rooms there is an art gallery. On the second floor there is a children's theater and a dance room. No changes were made in the building during the renovation. Red brick, lime, river stone, oak and beech trees were used in the construction of the building.

Later his son Samad, then his grandson Mammadhasan continued this art. The latter, in turn, taught this art to his son Yahya. In the 20th century, the development of the art of halva - making in Sheki and its recognition at the national level is associated with Yahya's name. Yahya, a confectioner who continued this job in different places, regions and cities in different years, taught this art to his children who, in turn, taught their children. "Halvachi Yahya Shirniyyat Evi", currently located in the historical site of Sheki called Yukhari Caravanserai, has been operating in the same place for 25 years.

Shaki Caravanserai

Swift development of trade in the Middle Ages enhanced the importance of caravanserais in the territory of Azerbaijan, favoring the construction of new ones. Generally, caravanserais were built in form of fortified structures with a single gate. During dangerous incidents the gate could be closed, rendering the building impregnable. The “Caravanserai” historical complex in Sheki consists of two magnificent caravanserais, traditionally named “Yukhary” and “Ashaghy” caravanserais, which in Azerbaijani signify the "Upper" and "Lower" Caravanserai, respectively. Construction of these caravanserais is dated to the 18th–19th centuries AD.

Sheki Khan's palace

Resting in the shade of 500-year-old plane trees at the top of Sheki, the lavishly decorated Palace of Sheki Khans is our most exquisite architectural monument of the khanate period. It was built in the late 18th century as the ruling Sheki Khan’s summer residence in the cool foothills of the Caucasus Mountains. The local rulers clearly had an eye for detail: the palace is laden with intricate details both inside and out, from sprawling frescoes to geometrically patterned tiles. The palace’s windows are also the best place to see one of Sheki’s signature crafts – shebeke, a technique of filling wooden lattices with thousands of pieces of coloured glass fitted together without glue or nails
