Like the previous Tana Toraja route: https://es.wikiloc.com/wikiloc/view.do?id=19115604 , the kilometers are relative since most of them are by minibus.
This tour was accompanied by a local guide. Following the track the guide service is not necessary. Another way to explore my proposal is to do it by renting a motorcycle. For very little money you can perfectly reach all these places and it can be a fun proposal. Here it is not as dangerous to ride a motorcycle as in other places in Indonesia.
We start again by taking the minibus in Rantepao. The first destination is to see the ritual of a funeral. It is an event of tourist interest and at this time they take the opportunity to do all the ceremonies of the year. Although it seems incredible, when someone dies they keep it in the house without burying it (sometimes up to 4 years). According to their beliefs, the deceased should not be dismissed abruptly and they keep their body at home so that the "farewell" is little by little. They even make a sculpture imitating the dead person that they put in the niche so that for many more years it seems that it is still there.
In the burial ceremony, a kind of "pilgrimage" is prepared where neighbors, friends, relatives go... carrying gifts. They carry pigs that if the family of the deceased considers, they sacrifice it to eat it among those present. The climax of the ceremony is the sacrifice of one or several buffaloes (depending on the purchasing power of the deceased). The buffalo must die on its feet, from one or more saber blows to the throat. (As it is a bit morbid I have not included photos with too much detail).
When we finished the ceremony we walked back to the minibus seeing the landscape of this region. Rice fields and typical architecture accompany us on this section.
We got back on the minibus to go see a town with typical houses and burials of children in trees. As they were smaller, the niche was carved in the trunk. (I have it marked on the track although it seemed a bit “touristy”, with stalls selling souvenirs included).
The next stop point is a burial cave. Very interesting place surrounded by rice fields. Inside the cave we could see bone remains, mainly skulls and other objects related to burials. Also sculptures representing the buried. (Also marked on the track).
And finally we went to Datang Suaya, the last burial place we visited. This time on a cliff with a considerable height. It is surprising to see how the coffins are raised by hand up to that height by tied bamboos.
Finished this last location we returned by minibus to Rantepao.
