🇪🇦🏙️ Palma de Mallorca​ es una ciudad y municipio español, capital de la isla de Mallorca y de la comunidad autónoma de las Islas Baleares. Está ubicada en la parte occidental del mar Mediterráneo y, dentro de la isla, hacia el suroeste. Se encuentra a unos 250 km al este de la península ibérica. Es la octava mayor ciudad de España por población y la primera de las Islas Baleares.​

Se sitúa en el centro de la bahía de Palma, a unos 13 m sobre el nivel del mar, entre la sierra de Na Burguesa y el Prado de Sant Jordi. La atraviesan varios torrentes, como el de la Riera y el de Gros.

Fue fundada con el nombre de Palma por el cónsul romano Quinto Cecilio Metelo Baleárico en el año 123 a. C. Se estima que su asentamiento actual corresponde con las ruinas romanas que se encuentran bajo su casco histórico, aunque aún no existen pruebas irrefutables.​ Después de estar en manos de los vándalos y los árabes en 903, fue conquistada por el rey Jaime I de Aragón el 31 de diciembre de 1229,13​ convirtiéndose en la Ciutat de Mallorca, capital de su propio reino, que decayó tras su incorporación a la Corona de Aragón en 1279.

En 1715 entraron en vigor los Decretos de Nueva Planta, recuperando la ciudad su topónimo romano, Palma. Ya en el siglo xx, fue protagonista de un intenso auge turístico durante las décadas de 1960 y 1970. En la actualidad constituye un notable centro económico y cultural a nivel insular, autonómico y nacional.

Fue Alcántara Peña el primero en señalar esta localización, ya que hasta ahora se creía que la antigua Palma podría haber estado situada en las zonas de Sa Carrotja (Las Salinas) o en S'Horta de'n Palmer (Campos), debido al hallazgo de los restos de una necrópolis, y restos de cerámica, lápidas y urnas funerarias.​ A los nombres de las dos principales ciudades romanas en Mallorca, Palma y Pollentia, los estudiosos les han dado «connotaciones militaristas, triunfalistas, augurales, etc«, interpretando «Palma» como «palmas del triunfo» y relacionándolo con Pollentia, que significa «superioridad» o «poder», aunque la relación entre los dos nombres podría ser de una naturaleza totalmente distinta.

Solo se conoce el nombre con certeza desde la época musulmana, momento en que se llamaba Madina Mayurqa. Con la conquista en 1229 por Jaime I se tradujo el nombre a Ciutat de Mallorca. Tras perder Mallorca la guerra de Sucesión española, una de las medidas impuestas por los Decretos de Nueva Planta de Felipe V fue la recuperación del nombre romano de «Palma», sin la muletilla «de Mallorca». Dicha muletilla apareció bien entrado el siglo xix,16​ para diferenciarla de otras poblaciones españolas con el mismo nombre como La Palma, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Palma del Río, Palma de Gandía o Palma de Cervelló entre muchas otras.

Habitualmente se la conoce como «Palma de Mallorca», especialmente por gente de fuera de la isla. El nombre ha sido utilizado incluso en documentación oficial del Ayuntamiento.​ Sin embargo, según un informe del archivero municipal, nunca ha llevado oficialmente la coletilla «de Mallorca». Por diversas circunstancias, eminentemente de carácter político, el registro de Entidades Locales del Ministerio de Administraciones Públicas continuó usando el nombre de «Palma de Mallorca» hasta que fue finalmente corregido en octubre de 2008. Cabe destacar que es un error bastante común denominar Palma de Mallorca a la isla de Mallorca o a todo el archipiélago balear. En noviembre de 2011 el ayuntamiento de la ciudad aprobó la modificación de la Ley de Capitalidad para recuperar nuevamente el «de Mallorca» dentro del nombre oficial de la ciudad. Los motivos que llevaron al ejecutivo a tomar esta decisión fueron, en palabras del portavoz del Ayuntamiento, «la mejor identificación de la ciudad en el terreno comercial, cultural, económico, lingüístico, jurídico, e incluso en internet».

En enero de 2016 el pleno de Cort aprobó el cambio de nombre de la ciudad, con lo que volverá a llamarse «Palma» en lugar de «Palma de Mallorca». La propuesta fue presentada por el equipo de Gobierno del Consistorio palmesano (PSIB, MÉS y Podemos) y era una de las iniciativas planteadas desde el inicio de la legislatura municipal.​

El gentilicio en español de sus habitantes es «palmesano», derivado de la versión catalana del mismo, palmesà. Por otro lado, se considera correcto el uso del gentilicio «palmense» —utilizado para los naturales de otras poblaciones llamadas Palma— para referirse a los ciudadanos de la capital balear, si bien su uso es prácticamente nulo.


🇬🇧🏙️ Palma de Mallorca​ is a Spanish city and municipality, capital of the island of Mallorca and of the autonomous community of the Balearic Islands. It is located in the western part of the Mediterranean Sea and, within the island, towards the southwest. It is located about 250 km east of the Iberian Peninsula. It is the eighth largest city in Spain by population and the first of the Balearic Islands.

It is located in the center of the bay of Palma, about 13 m above sea level, between the Na Burguesa mountain range and the Prado de Sant Jordi. Several torrents cross it, such as the Riera and the Gros.

It was founded under the name of Palma by the Roman consul Quinto Cecilio Metelo Balearico in the year 123 BC. It is estimated that its current settlement corresponds to the Roman ruins found under its historic center, although there is still no irrefutable evidence. After being in the hands of the Vandals and the Arabs in 903, it was conquered by King Jaime I of Aragon on December 31, 1229,13 becoming the Ciutat de Mallorca, capital of its own kingdom, which declined after its incorporation into the Crown of Aragon in 1279.

In 1715 the Nueva Planta Decrees came into force, recovering the city its Roman place name, Palma. Already in the 20th century, it was the protagonist of an intense tourist boom during the 1960s and 1970s. Today it is a notable economic and cultural center at an island, regional and national level.

Alcántara Peña was the first to point out this location, since until now it was believed that the old Palma could have been located in the areas of Sa Carrotja (Las Salinas) or in S'Horta de'n Palmer (Campos), due to the discovery of the remains of a necropolis, and remains of ceramics, tombstones and funerary urns. Scholars have given the names of the two main Roman cities in Mallorca, Palma and Pollentia, "militaristic, triumphalist, augural connotations, etc", interpreting "Palma" as "palms of triumph" and relating it to Pollentia, which means "superiority" or "power", although the relationship between the two names could be of an entirely different nature.

The name has only been known with certainty since Muslim times, when it was called Madina Mayurqa. With the conquest in 1229 by James I, the name was translated into Ciutat de Mallorca. After Mallorca lost the War of the Spanish Succession, one of the measures imposed by Felipe V's Nueva Planta Decrees was the recovery of the Roman name of "Palma", without the crutch "of Mallorca". This crutch appeared well into the 19th century,16 to differentiate it from other Spanish towns with the same name such as La Palma, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Palma del Río, Palma de Gandía or Palma de Cervelló among many others.

It is usually known as "Palma de Mallorca", especially by people from outside the island. The name has even been used in official documentation from the Town Hall. However, according to a report from the municipal archivist, it has never officially carried the tag "from Mallorca". Due to various circumstances, eminently of a political nature, the Registry of Local Entities of the Ministry of Public Administrations continued to use the name "Palma de Mallorca" until it was finally corrected in October 2008. It should be noted that it is a fairly common mistake to call Palma de Majorca to the island of Majorca or to the entire Balearic archipelago. In November 2011, the city council approved the modification of the Capital Law to once again recover the "de Mallorca" within the official name of the city. The reasons that led the executive to make this decision were, in the words of the City Council spokesperson, "the best identification of the city in the commercial, cultural, economic, linguistic, legal fields, and even on the Internet."

In January 2016, the plenary session of Cort approved the change of the name of the city, with which it will once again be called "Palma" instead of "Palma de Mallorca". The proposal was presented by the government team of the Palma City Council (PSIB, MÉS and Podemos) and was one of the initiatives proposed since the beginning of the municipal legislature.

The name in Spanish of its inhabitants is "palmesano", derived from the Catalan version of it, palmesà. On the other hand, the use of the name "palmense" —used for the natives of other towns called Palma— to refer to the citizens of the Balearic capital is considered correct, although its use is practically nil.
