Itinerary description
Walking - Except for its northern tip in Swiss territory, Lake Maggiore lies in the Italian regions of Piedmont to the west and Lombardy to the east. The coastline is dotted with charming cities and villages for its entire length of 64 Km (40 mi) in length. Public boat services run daily to connect several locations on both sides for the entire length up and down including Switzerland. Various ticketing options including hop-on-hop-off which is the suggested formula for a nice day out. Villas and gardens galore.
Otther private services or tours are also available as well as sailboat rentals.
Fine dining everywhere. Expect not to be alone.
The three small Borromee Islands of Isola Bella, Isola dei Pescatori (or Superiore) and Isola Madre are all served by boats every 30 minutes.
Although Laveno is also served by boat services, this track includes a drive with friends to Laveno where we caught the cable car to the panoramic point of Sasso del Ferro. It summit at 1062 m (3,484 ft) can be reached by a 15-20 minutes walk in the woods. Spending some time at higher elevation can be a great idea to escape the brutal heat in summer months.
