Itinerary description
The Western Ramparts (Vestvolden) are a huge set of constructions covering a strip at least 14km long. There is a large raised rampart and numerous old fortifications built into the rampart.
This walk covers the sections of the ramparts in the Roedovre area. The main cycle/walking path tends to run along the edge of the rampart, with a walking track typically on the top of the rampart. The old fortifications are typically found on the cycle/walking track, although this is not always the case.
I think, on balance, that the more southern area of the ramparts is more interesting, however this area was still a very pleasant walk.
I wanted a circular walk, rather than returning via the same route, so I decided to take in some of the other green areas in Roedovre (the lake and some of the other parks) well as another wetland area.
The result of this was that I needed to make quite a long walk along a busy street to complete the loop. I don't know that this was entirely satisfactory, however, it provides a change to look at various buildings in the area.
An alternative approach to provide a circular walk, is to walk one way on the top of the rampart and return via the cycle/walking path. I used this on the lower section of the ramparts and it was very successful.
Most of the fortifications are well maintained (ie. locked and graffiti free), however there are some that are in a state of disrepair.
Note: Copenhagen is the European Green Capital 2014. Copenhagen Green is a guide to 100 green locations in greater Copenhagen. It is a great source for things to see and do in Copenhagen. See www.copenhagengreen.dk for all the information on the locations. There is a large format book, small guide books and also an ebook that contains information for all the locations.
