Itinerary description

The area is locally known as 'Stump of the Castle' formerly Kilcommon Castle which was built c.1320 by Sir Hugh Lawless.

The site is an access point to the Avonmore Way walking trail which follows the course of the Avonmore River to the picturesque settlement of Clara Vale and beyond to Trooperstown Wood near Laragh. This linear waymarked trail offers peaceful views of the Avonmore River and the mature oakwoods of the Vale of Clara Nature Reserve before reaching the quaint Roman Catholic church and arched bridge at Clara Vale. The main tree species here include oak, birch, rowan and holly with ground flora of bluebell, woodrush, fraughan and heather. The special nature of biodiversity in the area is recognised by its designation as a National Nature Reserve. As the trail climbs and skirts Trooperstown Hill it offers magnificent views of the surrounding Wicklow Mountains as far as the Glendalough, Glendasan and Glenmacnass Valleys.

Avonmore Way

Enjoy the wonderful views of the Wicklow Mountains, the Vale of Clara and scenic sights along the Avonmore River as it makes its way from Rathdrum to Trooperstown.
